RICHARD M. KRAUSE


			Richard Krause received his B.A. degree at Marietta College (1947) and his M.D. at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (1952).
			

Richard Krause was appointed Assistant Professor of the Rockefeller Institute and Associate Physician to the Rockefeller Hospital in 1957 and became an Associate Professor in 1961. From 1962 to 1966, he served on the Faculty of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri as Professor of Epidemiology and Associate Professor, then Professor, of Medicine. In 1966, he returned to the Rockefeller University as Associate Professor and Physician to the Hospital; in 1968, he was given the rank of Professor with Rockefeller University and Senior Physician to the Hospital where he served until 1975. Richard Krause was appointed Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health (1975-1984). He became Dean of the Emory University School of Medicine and Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Medicine in 1984 and served in this capacity until 1989 when he returned to the National Institutes of Health as Senior Scientific Advisor to the John E. Fogarty International Center for Advanced Studies in the Health Sciences.

Richard Krause's honors and awards include election to Membership in the National Academy of Sciences, 1977; Honorary Doctor of Science Degree, Marietta College, 1978; Distinguished Service Medal, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, 1979; Honorary Doctor of Science Degree, University of Rochester, 1979; Order of Gumhuria Award, Republic of Egypt, 1980; election to Membership in the Institute of Medicine, 1981; C. William O'Neal Distinguished American Service Award, Marietta, Ohio, 1981; Honorary Doctor of Science Degree, Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, 1981; Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1982; Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree and Honorary Doctor of Science Degree, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1982; Robert Koch Gold Medal Award, Robert Koch Foundation, Robert Koch Institute, Berlin, 1984; and Senior U.S. Scientist Award, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, 1986.

Richard Krause has over 150 publication in the epidemiology and pathogenesis of streptococcal infections and rheumatic fever, the immunochemistry of microbial antigens, antibody structure, and genetic control of the immune response.
