FUTURE ACCELERATOR PROJECTS IN JAPAN

HIROTAKA SUGAWARA

I would like to describe scientific activities of Japan which utilize the particle accelerators of various kinds. The fields include high energy physics, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, biophysics, etc.

I would also like to discuss some of the future plans of the above fields being considered in KEK (National Laboratory for High Energy Physics). Some of the examples are:

(1) B-factory

The purpose of the project is to study the origin of CP-violation and rare decays of B mesons.

(2) Large Hadron Project

This is a multipurpose project which includes the material science using the 0.6 MW spallation neutron sources and µ-on spin resonances, etc. , nuclear physics using the 50 GeV proton synchrotron and particle physics using ƒË-beam and K-on beam from the same machine.

(3) Linear Collider Project

The purpose of the project is to discover Higgs particle and superparticles by constructing the TeV energy e+e- linear collider. The construction should be done by an international collaboration.
