Davis J. Ramsay

 

Dr. David J. Ramsay joined the University of Maryland, Baltimore from the University of California, San Francisco, where he was Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. He joined UCSF in 1974 as a faculty member in the Department of Physiology and chaired that department on an acting basis for one year prior to his appointment as Senior Vice Chancellor in 1982. During his 12 year tenure as Senior Vice Chancellor, UCSF rose to national eminence, particularly in the areas of strengthened academic programs and increased community involvement. During this period Dr. Ramsay developed a special interest in science policy and issues surrounding technology development and intellectual property.

Dr. Ramsay joined the University of Maryland, Baltimore as President in 1994. At that institution he has responsibility for Schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Work and the Graduate School. The campus has an enrollment of 6,000, the majority studying for graduate and first professional degrees. The University of Maryland is situated in downtown Baltimore in the inner harbor region, two blocks from Camden Yards.

Dr. Ramsay also serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Maryland Medical System, the universityÕs affiliated hospital system. In that capacity he serves on the BoardÕs Executive and Finance committees, and chairs the BoardÕs Strategic Planning Committee.

Dr. Ramsay was educated at Oxford, where he received his baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees, and proceeded to earn his medical degree. He was later awarded the D.M., an advanced medical degree. He jointed the faculty at Oxford, where he was a University Lecturer and Fellow and Medical Tutor at Corpus Christi College.

Since arriving at the University of Maryland, Dr. Ramsay has overseen a dramatic development in the institutionÕs research and clinical activities. He is Chairman of the Board of a newly established enterprise to deliver fully integrated health care in a number of primary and multi-specialty care sites.
