Masaaki Terada

 

Dr. Masaaki Terada graduated from Kyoto University Faculty of Medicine in 1961, and earned M.D. After finishing internship at Yokosuka U.S. Naval Hospital, he entered into postgraduate course in Kyoto University Faculty of Medicine and obtained the degree of Doctor of Medical Science in 1968. He then moved to Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, and he became an assistant professor at Department of Human Genetics and Development and Cancer Research Center there in 1974. He came back to National Cancer Center Research Institute in 1978 and was appointed as a chief of Genetics Division there in 1983. He became Deputy Director of the institute in 1989, and was appointed as Director of the institute in 1992 and served as Director up to the present time. In 1996, he was also appointed as a visiting professor of Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine.

His major area is molecular oncology with special reference to genetic change in human cancer, including gene amplification. He is the leaders of on-going Comprehensive 10-year Strategy for Cancer Control by Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan. Because of his accomplishment and academic works, he was awarded the Princess Takamatsu Cancer Research Award in 1987, and the Takeda Prize for Medical Science in 1991. He served as a member of several international and national scientific committees, including the Award Assembly of General Motors Cancer Research Fund, the Scientific Council of International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Executive Committee of Japanese Cancer Association. He also served as a member of many governmental administrative committees. He is on the editorial boards of more ten international journals, including Journal of the American Medical Association. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Japanese Journal of Cancer Research.
