Science in Japan; Present and Future
Recent Trends in Japanese Science and TechnologyTwo consecutive seminars to introduce science and technology in Japan were held in February 1996.
First, Science in Japan: Present and Future was held in Washington D.C. It was sponsored by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), organized by its Washington Liaison Office (JSPS-WLO) and co-sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, National Science Foundation, Fogarty International Center of National Institute of Health, Department of Energy.
Second, Recent Trends in Japanese Science and Technology was held in Baltimore as part of the 1996 AAAS Annual Meeting and Science Innovation Exposition (AMSIE'96). The seminar was organized by Dr. Masa-Toshi Koshiba, Director of JSPS-WLO and Dr. Richard Getzinger, Director, Directorate of International Programs of AAAS.
At both seminars, four Japanese eminent researchers, Prof. Toshio Sata, Prof. Minoru Oda, Prof. Leo Esaki and Prof. Setsuro Ebashi, discussed sciencein Japan. Additionally, in the Science in Japan: Present and Future seminar, Mr. Hitoshi Osaki discussed science policy in Japan; Prof. Daniel Nathans and Prof. Leon Lederman discussed from the point of view of the U.S. academic society; and Prof. Allan Bromley moderated and Prof. James Cronin participated in the following roundtable discussion.
