Hiroo Imura Dr. Hiroo Imura was born in 1931 and graduated from Kyoto University Faculty of Medicine in 1954. After internship and residency, he majored in endocrinology and obtained the degree, Doctor of Medical Science in 1962. After being trained in University of California San Francisco in 1963~65, he was appointed to be Assistant Professor of Medicine, Kyoto University in 1965 and then, Professor of Medicine, Kobe University in 1971. He has come back to Kyoto University as Professor in 1977. He served as the Dean of Medical School in 1989~91 and then President of Kyoto University between 1991 and 1997.
His major research area is endocrinology and diabetes, with special reference to pituitary hormones, cardiovascular hormones and insulin. Because of his accomplishment in academic works, he was awarded Dale Medal from British Endocrine Societies in 1985, Takeda Medical Award from Takeda Science Foundation in 1986, Erwin von Baelz Award from C. H. Boehringer Sohn Ingelheim am Rhein in 1988, Medical Award from Japan Medical Association in 1991, Asia and Oceania Medal from the Society for Endocrinology (UK) in 1995 and Robert H. Williams Distinguished Leadership Award from Endocrine Society (USA) in 1997. He was elected to be a member of Japan Academy in 1995 and a Foreign Honorary Member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1995. He served as Presidents of Japan Endocrine Society, Japan Diabetes Society, Japan Society of Internal Medicine, Japan Cancer Society and International Society of Endocrinology. He is on the editorial board of several international journals including New England Journal of Medicine.
