JSPS Science café was held on December 9th at the JSPS Washington Office. Dr. Sho Suzuki, Postdoctoral Associate, Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics, Cornell University gave a lecture entitled “What is autophagy? – the cleaner in the cell.”

This event was held in honor of Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi who was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. In the session, Dr. Suzuki spoke about Dr. Ohsumi’s award winning work on mechanism of autophagy. He explained the possibility of the relation between autophagy and particular illnesses and explained how it affects our immune system. Also Dr. Suzuki talked about his experiences when he was researching in Dr. Ohsumi’s Laboratory.

After the presentation, his talk spurred a lively Q&A discussion including technical topics with an audience of approximately 20 participants
