This year, about 80 participants gathered in-person and more than 60 participants attended online from Washington DC, other areas of the US, and also from other countries including Japan.
Opening
Following welcome remarks by Dr. Junji Urakawa, Director of JSPS Washington Office, Minister Koichi Ai, Embassy of Japan in the United States of America, congratulated the forum on the occasion of science diplomacy between the U.S. and Japan.
Furthermore, Dr. Kimberly J. Montgomery, Director, International Affairs and Science Diplomacy, Center for Science Diplomacy, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Ms. Anne L. Emig, Director, Cluster Lead for Programs and Analysis, Program Director for Japan, National Science Foundation (NSF), both long-time co-sponsors for the Forum, gave congratulatory remarks and expressed their delight at being brought together again this year in this location.
Keynote Speech
In the lecture session with the topic of “Quantum Taste of the Universe,” Prof. Masashi Hazumi, Director of QUP (International Center for Quantum-field Measurement Systems for Studies of the Universe and Particles), gave a keynote speech titled “Tasting the quantum universe with the quantum devices,” in which he discussed curiosity-driven research activities surrounding the mysteries of the universe and the efforts of the QUP were introduced with humor.
QUP is one of the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) Centers.
WPI aims to build “globally visible” research centers in Japan that boast a high research standard and outstanding research environment during 10 years.
Session 1: Observations of the quantum fields in the early universe through Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)
Prof. Adrian T. Lee, WPI-QUP Principal Investigator and Professor, University of California, Berkeley, offered a presentation titled “Ultra-high Energy Physics with the Cosmic Microwave Background.”
The following lecture, titled “Exploring the Early Universe and the Evolution of the Universe: A View from the Ground,” was made by Dr. Akito Kusaka, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, The University of Tokyo and Senior Scientist, Physics Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Session 2: Dark Matter, searching for relic quantum fields in the current universe
Prof. Reina Maruyama, Professor, Department of Physics, Yale University, offered a presentation titled “Dark Matter, Axions, and Quantum Sensors.”
The following lecture, titled “Light Dark Matter searches with innovative quantum sensors,” was made by Dr. Maurice Garcia-Sciveres, WPI-QUP Principal Investigator and Senior scientist, Physics Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Session 3: Quantum field and future society
The lecture session was concluded by a talk on industrial applications of the measurement of quantum fields, titled “Manipulating classical and quantum waves” by Dr. Hideo Iizuka, WPI-QUP Principal Investigator and Senior Fellow, Toyota Central R&D Labs., Inc.
Session 4: Panel Discussion “Future of quantum-field measurements”
In the panel discussion, Prof. Dmitri Denisov, Deputy Associate Laboratory Director for High Energy Physics, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Stony Brook University, acted as moderator.
After brief self-introductions by each speaker, the discussion evolved in various directions, inspired by on-the-spot questions from the participants on the cutting-edge topic of “Quantum Taste of the Universe.”
Closing
The forum wrapped up with Dr. Keisuke Okamura, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan in the United States of America’s closing remarks encouraging people to conduct interdisciplinary, intergenerational, and international collaborations.
After the forum, lecturers, co-sponsors and in-person participants joined a reception where all attendees were proactively networking with each other beyond their backgrounds.
